Set the frame rate, retime and trim an image sequence
4 min read · Checked against Sequency 1.3 · Updated
Short answer
Use the Frame Rate card to set the playback rate (1 to 120, including 23.976, 29.97 and 59.94), Duration → Change Duration to fit the shot to an exact length in seconds, and Duration → Select Frame Range to export only part of it. Retiming repeats or skips whole frames; it does not interpolate.
Steps
- 1
Set the playback rate
Open Frame Rate and type a value, or click 23.976 fps, 29.970 fps or 59.940 fps. For a video source, turn on Custom Frame Rate first.
- 2
Trim to a range
Open Duration, turn on Select Frame Range and set the first and last source frames to export.
- 3
Fit to a duration
Turn on Change Duration and enter the length in seconds. Decimals work, so 0.25 or 12.5 are valid. Sequency repeats or drops whole frames to fit.
- 4
Renumber image output
When exporting an image sequence, set Start Frame in Format Options, for example 1001.
Frame rate versus duration
Changing only the frame rate changes how fast the same frames play: 48 frames last 2 seconds at 24 fps and 1.6 seconds at 30 fps. Change Duration does the opposite: it keeps the frame rate and chooses which source frames to show so the clip lasts exactly as long as you asked.
Sequency keeps fractional rates exact, so 23.976 is written as 24000/1001 rather than a rounded value that drifts against audio and timecode.
Questions
- Does Sequency do optical-flow slow motion?
- No. Retiming repeats or skips whole frames, which is what you want for plates and review files because no new pixels are invented.
